Creation of MONDO

Mondo is a collaborative project that Kevin Everson's film students at the University of Virginia participate in every Spring semester. Along with a central theme, students are given a detailed syllabus of specific actions, shots, and themes that should be presented within the final cut of the Mondo. As intro-level film students, we are tasked to use black & white 16mm reversal film to shoot our mondo, as it is the first film we are taught to use in the course. The film also contains zero dialogue and sound, but students are open to adding recorded sounds if they want to. Mondo follows somewhat of the same guidelines as a timed film festival, where students are given a weekend to create a script, create a set, and shoot the short film. Since the rolls of film need to be developed, editing starts the week the film is returned and digitized. Every student's cut is different from the other, making Mondo's storylines ambiguous and playful. Creating this year's Mondo was a very fun experience and a cool way to get out of my comfort zone with art. It was an awesome experience to share with my peers as we watched how everyone approaches the same footage differently.
